They serve different purposes. Some documents need notarization before apostille. Others do not.

  • Completes the required notarial act
  • May involve acknowledgment, oath, or witnessed signature
  • Includes the notary's seal and signature when required

Apostille

Frequently asked questions

Questions people ask before they hand over the document.

What is an apostille?

An apostille is a certificate used to authenticate certain public documents for use in another country that accepts the Hague apostille process.

Is an apostille the same as notarization?

No. A notarization is a notarial act. An apostille is issued by an authorized government authority to authenticate the official signature, seal, or authority connected to a qualifying document.

Can SurePath issue my apostille?

No. SurePath prepares and coordinates the process. For qualifying Tennessee requests, the apostille is issued through the Tennessee Secretary of State.

Does every document need to be notarized before apostille?

No. The correct process depends on the document type, issuing authority, and intended use.

What if my document was issued in another state?

The correct apostille authority generally depends on where the document originated. Tell us the issuing state during intake so we can help identify the correct next step.

What if the country does not accept apostilles?

The document may require an authentication or legalization process instead. We can help you identify that before you begin.

Can you notarize the document and then help with the apostille?

Yes, when notarization is appropriate for that document. Not every apostille request requires notarization first.

How long does the process take?

Timing depends on the document, government processing, and the service requested. We will explain the expected timeline before processing begins.

How do I get my document to SurePath?

You may bring it to an approved meeting location or mail it to SurePath at your own expense. Return shipping after apostille processing is included in the $120 one-document service.
