What’s inside

Your kit includes a DNA preservation card, sterile collection swabs, protective archival storage materials, consent and sample documentation, registration information, a Certificate of Preservation, step-by-step instructions, and access to instructional guidance.

Everything is packaged together so the family has both the preserved sample and the information connected to it.

How it works

Collect. Follow the included instructions to collect the sample.

Preserve. Apply the sample to the provided preservation material and allow it to dry according to the instructions.

Document. Record who the sample belongs to and the important details surrounding the collection.

Store. Keep the preserved sample and its documentation together in a safe, protected location.

Why preserve DNA?

DNA preservation is about keeping an option available for questions your family cannot predict today.

A future relationship question, an unknown branch of the family tree, or another DNA-testing need may arise long after the person who could easily provide a fresh sample is no longer available.

Preservation cannot guarantee an answer, but it may help preserve the possibility of one.

What DNA preservation can and cannot do

A properly preserved sample may potentially be useful for future DNA analysis, depending on the condition of the sample, the testing requested, and the laboratory’s requirements at that time.

The kit does not provide a DNA result; provide health, medical, ancestry, or genetic information; guarantee that a future laboratory will accept the sample; guarantee that every future type of DNA testing will be possible; or replace a legal chain-of-custody collection when a future court-admissible test requires one.
